My little world

This is the best time of day, when baby is freshly laundered, food is in our tummies, and Sandra Boynton pays us all a visit.

Egg hair

This morning at breakfast, Bear had a fuzzy in her hair. I pulled it out and showed her. She then used her eggy little hands to straighten her hair like I did, giggling the whole time. I wiped her hair off with a wet wipe, and she "fixed" her hair with a huge grin. I let her laugh, and laughed with her as I just wiped off her hands so she could tidy her mane without leaving egg remains on her head.
This is parenthood, not making a big deal of the little things like sticky hands. Is it easy? Nope. But when your kiddo is punchy and trying to help you out, it's okay if things get messy. Your little one is learning big people things from you - not just how to do chores, but flexibility, grace, and lightheartedness.

Little Helper

Bear made it down almost an entire aisle at the grocery store by using the bottom of the shopping cart as a walker. She really enjoyed herself, and this mama is very proud of her little girl-child.

Goodwill finds on a snowy Saturday

Bear went with mama to Goodwill this morning and we totally scored on some spring/summer outfits. Three new Old Navy dresses, a denim skirt, and a new white cotton Cherokee sweater. (All in size 2T, which almost fit this tall toddler already! ((She's in 18 months on top right now :) ))

For a dollar each, that's not too shabby. Salvation Army usually has better prices, but it's harder to find new clothing there, so this mama was happy to find a few outfits for her Bear after leaving hibernation.

Ebay

In case you were wondering, we're venturing into the world of selling our possessions on eBay...  And Cora's totally on board with all the research involved 😂

Rocking chair time!

Yesterday, I got to snuggle with my little Bearsauce. She fell asleep in the car on the way home from church, and slept snuggled on my shoulders in the recliner while we postponed dinner.  It's been at least six months since we've been able to just rock, the two of us....   and I missed it. My heart missed it so.  I know it might not happen again very often, but I know one thing - my God is a God who is waiting for me to snuggle with Him, too, so I'm going to post less on Facebook and spend more time doing things that matter. I might post more on this blog so family and friends can keep up with my speedy toddlesaur, but I want to have better priorities in life. :)

Toodles!

Taco Bell giggles

This is Bear, tootling away during snack time the morning after Taco Bell in the car (chicken quesadilla and some Fiesta potatoes). She toots, then she giggles....

Culinary renovations

Bear likes her Hape Mini Kitchen ... She'll push it around like a walker, set things on it,
... And attempt a backsplash remodel all in her own.

Sully and Sally

I was telling Bear about the big scary  dude from Monster's Inc. and said, "he's Sully." So she peered under the couch where Sally was....

So we had an impromptu meeting of silly animals 😇

Tiny tornadoes

This is life now, working on concentration skills with a tiny, beautiful tornado. This child is full of exuberance and loves new things, small creatures, orphaned babies, and anything with moving parts. She loves figuring things out on her own, and will scramble over to us to show us something she's learning, even if she has no idea what's going on.

I tell our little Bear almost daily that "God made you just right," and I wholeheartedly believe that. Especially when I see bits of my hubby or myself in her.

Leftover birthday bath ideas

We had a few balloons leftover from Bear's birthday, so we invited one to play in the bathtub. ... Mainly because she wasn't wearing a diaper to catch the reason behind an emptying and refilling of the tub,... But kiddo had a lot of fun with the balloon. Five minutes at LEAST!

Traffic cam

Bear got to watch some steamrollers work on the road across the yard. It was very exciting!

After nap,...

Comes awesome hair!!

(After taking a nap in the recliner with daddy, while daddy watched "Masha and the Bear" on Netflix)

One!

This girl is ONE (well, for over a week now) and learning new things every minute!

Bear is one!

This is Bear on the morning of her birth-day :) she got to spend some time with grandpa from out of town, and we had a little gathering of family, kitties, and doggies. Cheeseburgers, cat shaped salmon patties, snacks, and cupcakes and ice cream. She got some lovely gifts and thoroughly enjoyed figuring out how to open them. Used up way too much energy and loved spending time with her close in age cousin and her other relatives. We plan on having another party in a month or so for the rest of our family who couldn't make it.

Bear's learning so much every day, and she's truly becoming a jewel.

Eggs and garbanzos for breakfast!

Bear had eggs and garbanzo beans for breakfast.
... She enjoys talking with her foods before she eats them all up.

Books!

This little girl loves her books!! We got A Mi Manera from the library and I'm not sure which she liked more, the crinkly library binding or the illustrations of two little friends doing things throughout their day...  Bear is almost a year old, and her mama loves that this book is in both Spanish and English. We give this book five paw prints ☺

The One And Only...

Cheerios!! Bear tried these little circles of delight last night in the car for the first time. So yummy! She just turned eleven months old two days ago :) this is the Bear herself, enjoying smacking her tray and making the Cheerios bounce like tiny little Mexican jumping beans.

Bikini Body Mommy 1.0: Day 1 - Fit Test

Had oatmeal with blueberries and cinnamon (and a dash of maple syrup / brown sugar) for breakfast.
Salad  (romaine lettuce, roasted sweet potatoes, ham, and a sprinkle of cheddar) for lunch.

Cora didn't feel like napping right away since she slept in, so I let her watch me do the Fit Test for DAY ONE of the Bikini Body Mommy 1.0 Series.

I've done the fit test four times already (third try starting BBM was this morning) - it's been hard, with moving, and a baby, and no space of our own, but I. Am. Going. To. Make. It. Work.
Also, I am 218.2 pounds, and that is not good. (yes, I wrote that on here. I've gained 10 pounds since we moved back to Michigan because my body doesn't handle stress well, my inlaws have a carb-heavy diet, and we don't have much money to "splurge" on greens.

No more. I'm tired of being bloated and tired, and miss feeling strong like I did after I made it through a few weeks of BBM last time. Plus, I'd love to be healthier for any future pregnancies.

It helps to be a lurker of a "6-week weightless" group on Facebook with several other people - I don't have the money to enter the contest, but I've been trying to at least be more active in how I "live."  It's much easier now that I have my own key to the house and can leave with Cora if I want to. :D

So here is the results of my fit test from this morning - albeit rushed, since Cora wanted to climb on the folding chair I was using and crawl under me when I was trying to push myself.

Fit Test Day 1 Scores:
(50 seconds on, 10 seconds of rest (well, maybe a few more seconds to restart the stopwatch and pull Cora back closer to me)

1. Speed squats:  52
2. High Knees: 118
3. Pushups: 30 (modified against the wall, since Cora took over what little floorspace was available. :D
4. Squat jumps: 33
5. Tricep dips: 27
6. Burpees: 15 (slightly modified so as not to take out the infant crawling around me)
7. Alternating lunges: 35 (I accidentally did these first instead of speed squats because my body got confused. hahaha ...
8. Plank: 35 seconds modified. (on my knees. Technically I shouldn't be doing planks since I have a diastasis recti ... but I wanted to try it.   I need to probably not do them for a while yet. :/

Tomorrow is going to be ... sore. Per the usual.  Come Thursday, though... don't mess with me because I'm stronger than I think! :)

Baby trap!

I was able to make an entire pot of coffee while Cora worked on this box of Tazo :)

Books

I've been reading again. Selfishly taking time (during the Bear's naps) I could be using to fold laundry or put dishes away or I don't know, maybe crochet. But I've been reading instead, ... and I guess I can claim the excuse of my husband saying I needed to take some time to just chill and stop DOING so much. ...

Hope reading counts as not much! :)

I'm on the third book in the Divergent series; I got Divergent free from Redbox a week ago, and basically it did not really compare to the book. it seemed very... stale. But that's okay, here's to another free movie soon to check out Insurgent.  :)   The books are a relatively fast read, along the lines of the Hunger Games, but in Chicago-ish. Give 'em a try if you need some down time. ...but maybe not before bed if Things Keep You Up.

Tiny Tot School: string!

I was on the hunt for more things to explore with little Bear, and 1+1+1=1 had an idea for littles: string!
So I put some yarn in a box and let Cora go to town.

...I think it's safe to say she enjoyed herself!

Vegan Black Bean Brownie Recipe

I've been trying hard to cut back on sugar, and adding more of the things we get with WIC and our local food pantry into our diets. I tried to make this recipe by substituting applesauce in place of the sugar, but it tasted like straight-up cocoa powder... So instead, I reduced the sugar by 3/4 cup, and it tasted much better. My husband ate his in approximately 30 seconds, so extra fiber, protein, and antioxidants for the win! :)

I look forward to "tweaking" more recipes and sharing them here on the ole blog. Stay tuned for who know what I'll post next! :)

Vegan Black Bean Brownies
adapted from No Meat Athlete's Recipe

1 1/2 cups whole wheat flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
1 ½ cup sugar
1 1/4 cup cocoa
1 15 oz can black beans
1 tsp vanilla
2 ¼ c. applesauce
½ c. + 1 T. cold water

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

Mix together the flour, salt, baking powder, sugar, and cocoa, making sure to break apart any clumps from the baking powder.

Rinse beans well and return to can. Fill the rest of the can with cold water. Puree beans and water in blender or food processor. (I used our Ninja Kitchen System).

Add bean puree, vanilla, applesauce, and the cold water to dry ingredients. Stir until combined.

Pour into a greased 9×13 pan.  Bake for 30-40 minutes, rotating the pan halfway through.  [Mine were closer to 40 minutes]. When the brownies are finished they should be firm in the center and the edges will be slightly puffy and starting to pull away from the sides.  It’s important not to overbake in the oven because they will keep baking once you take them out.
Let brownies cool completely before cutting.

(Or cut off a piece and make sure that they taste good, like we did!)

Cottage cheese at home, no carrageenan!

Found out tonight just how easy it is to make cottage cheese at home. . . Which is a great usage of all the milk Cora gets us :)

Take a gallon of your favorite percentage of milk and heat it to 180 degrees fahrenheit, stirring most of the time to prevent scalding. Once at that temperature, add 3/4 cup of vinegar -white or apple cider, again, your choice.
Stir in the vinegar and remove from heat. Let rest (i.e. Walk Away from it, go fold clothes or let the dog out or make a sandwich) for ten (10) minutes.

Pour into strainer lined with cheesecloth.
(You can put the strainer over a pan or bowl to catch the whey for drinking, watering plants, or other things I'm still leaning about)

Rinse with cold water, after removing the bowl slash pan that was under the strainer.
Let drain, add salt or seasonings if you desire, and eat.

You can add a little milk or cream to the curds, too.

This cottage cheese doesn't come out in neat little squares, but it tastes just as good - or better -because the only ingredients are milk and vinegar! :)

It's a great way to put your extra milk (if you get free milk with WIC or a food pantry) to good use.

Thumps in the Night

Something in the corner is making strange thumping noises. . . again.

I think we have dubbed her "Bear" quite appropriately. ... Paddington Bear - albeit a fictional bear from Darkest Peru - pops into my head every time I hear her thumps and bumps in the crib,

if you've ever been fortunate enough to read the Paddington books, you'll know what I mean.  It's a lot like the "quietness" that means trouble with little kids. . .

and it is all I can do to sit quietly and let her "rest."

... Rest, of course, being completely a summation of all the things she is most likely not doing.

She went to bed at 6:30, woke up around 9:45, ate a bit more, and went back to ... thumping, for the past hour or so. Perfect time to catch up on my meal planning and such, right?  ... A little hard to do, though, when one shares a living room and a bedroom with a crib-dwelling wee one.

Early Pi Day

Bear just took a nap that lasted 3.14 hours :)

why laundry is forever

You know you're a mama if you have a pile of laundry waiting to be folded (for a week) because the mere sound of laundry getting folded and taken care of wakes up a sleeping baby :)

[for all you not-yet-mamas, babies have supersonic hearing and extra sensitive vision, and can hear and see things that you didn't even notice!]
